The Wright brothers were the first people to fly a plane with a motor in December of 1903. The flight lasted 17 seconds. They flew on the beach, at Kitty Hawk in North Carolina. Charles Lindbergh was the first person to fly across the Atlantic Ocean solo. His plane was called The Spirit of St. Louis. He flew from New York, to Paris, France in 1927. The trip was 3,600 miles. He almost fell asleep but he could not fall asleep because the flight was not over. He stayed in the air for thirty-four hours. Amelia Earhart was born in 1898. When she was seven, in 1905, she was a tomboy. She wore pants. In 1905, girls were expected to wear long skirts. Amelia was allowed to do a lot things. Her dad let her play baseball, explore caves, fish, walk on stilts and collect insects. Amelia's family liked adventures. Amelia was ten years old when she saw a flying machine. During World War I, Amelia was a nurse. After that, she started to get into flight. In 1928, she became the first woman passenger to fly over the Atlantic Ocean. She flew over the Atlantic Ocean with two other men, but she said that she felt like baggage. She felt left out because she didn't get to fly the plane. So, she decided to fly across the Atlantic Ocean herself. In 1932, she was the first women to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. The plane was painted bright orange so that it could be seen in the water. After that, she set a goal to fly around the world. Her plane disappeared before she finished the trip. Bessie Coleman was the first black lady to fly a plane. She was born in Texas in 1892. She worked on a cotton field. She had a dream that she wanted to fly, some day. People said to her, "You can't fly." Bessie laughed, "Nobody owns the sky." She was once told, "Go to France, they won't mind even if you are black and a woman." So, she went to France to learn how to fly. She became a trick pilot. She did loops and many acrobatic things. She was in flying shows all over the U. S. She was very brave. In 1947, Chuck Yeager flew a BellX-1 jet faster than the speed of sound. He was a test pilot for the U. S. Air Force. Flying faster than the speed of sound is also called breaking the sound barrier.

When Neil Armstrong was young, he dreamed of flying. He flew in a plane when he was little. In 1969, Neil went to the moon. He was the first man to set foot on the moon. Buzz Aldrin and Mike Collins went with him. So, Buzz Aldrin was the second man to set foot on the moon. They flew in a Saturn rocket. Dr. Sally Ride was born in California, in 1951. As a young girl, she played tennis. She dreamed of becoming a professional tennis player. When she was in college, she read an ad in the newspaper and decided to apply to become an astronaut. She made it and she became the first American woman in space. She was a member of the Challenger team, in 1983. Dr. Ride now teaches at a university in California. She encourages women to study math and science. |

When Mae Jemison was a little girl, she dreamed of being a scientist. Her kindergarten teacher said, "Don't you mean a nurse?" Mae was sure that she wanted to be a scientist. She went to college and graduated in only three years. She became an engineer. After that, she went to medical school and became a doctor. She applied to the NASA space program to become an astronaut. She was accepted and in 1992, she became the first African American woman to be an astronaut. |
