Part One:

  • We got a tray of materials. These materials were: Styrofoam pieces, aluminum foil, table salt, plastic straws, black construction paper and cardboard pieces.
  • Each person got an ice cube.
  • Our job was to brainstorm and try ways to make the ice melt as quickly as possible.

SC 1.1.a

Some blew on the ice.

Some sprinkled salt on the ice, then blew on it.

Others covered the ice in foil or salt.

Part Two:

  • We experimented to see which materials would slow the melting of our ice.

What we discovered:

Speeds up Melting

Slows Melting

Blowing on the ice with the straw

Wrapping it in black paper

Leaving the ice uncovered

Put it in a dark place

Holding it in our hand

Put it in styrofoam

Putting salt on it

Do not touch it
